Children's adventure story set on Topsail Island, North Carolina in 1992. The boy, Alex is doing some early morning exploring. He finds an out-of-the-way boat dock where he meets an old retired fishing boat captain named Captain Dan. After becoming acquainted, Captain Dan asks Alex to take his new compass out of the box. While Alex is preoccupied, the captain unties his boat and before Alex can get off, they sail out to sea where they wander around because of the way Captain Dan reads the compass until they discover a new island. The dialog between the two is witty, whimsical and comical as the old man tries to convince Alex that Long John Silver is a great American hero, compasses are supposed to point in the direction that the boat travels and Alex's 50 year-old grandma is older than 90 year-old Captain Dan. Then Alex sees that Captain Dan's boat license expired in 1956! It is a story that makes children laugh, think, and it has a mysterious ending.
