Hamlin Garland was a short story writer, essayist, poet, and novelist in the first half of the 20th century. He is best known for his writings about hard working midwestern farm life. In 1917 he published his autobiography entitled A Son of the Middle Border and it's popularity prompted him to write the Sequel A Daughter of the Middle Border. Garland won the Pulitzer Prize for this work. In A Daughter of the Middle Border Garland continues his story as he sets out for Chicago. He meets an artist names Zlime who he later marries. The intensity he feels in this romance is equaled by the feelings he has about the coastal elite and his midwestern upbringing.
