Wilfred Grenfell was an early 20th century missionary stationed in Newfoundland and Labrador. He obtained his medical degree in England and was then sent to Newfoundland to set up a medical clinic. His work expanded to include orphanages, schools and industrial work projects. The setting for this book is Easter Sunday on the northern peninsula of Newfoundland. A young boy who has just had surgery needs Dr Grendell's help. Grendell sets out with his sled and dog team and while taking a short cut has the ice beneath him break. His sled and one dog drown. While cold and freezing on an ice pan rapidly going out to sea, he has to kill three dogs. Their skins provide warmth and their legs make a flag pole to help him summon help. After a day and a night he is rescued.
