Adventures in New Guinea was published in 1886 is a narrative about missionary work done on the island. The narrative discusses the exploration of the area, the missionary work and the role New Guinea played in Australian politics. Chalmers talks about the hard work done by the London Missionary Society in winning over the natives. Before the missionaries arrived the only contact with white men by the natives had been a negative one. The journals and papers of James Chalmers show him to be a remarkable man.
