DESCRIPTION
King Arthur, the round table, and Merlin's magic are not myths, but history. In nineteenth century England, where knights are more plentiful than peers and younger sons of lords hold the honorary title Squire, the Regency pattern of life remains. Young ladies are introduced to society; house parties are conducted. Camelot is in the heart of London. Pukas have been revered and feared since ancient times for their power. They are known for shape-shifting and mischievous deeds. The distant descendant of a puka, Martha Dunsmore cannot change forms, but she does have 'the luck of the Irish' and an impish streak. Taken hostage by a smuggler while browsing in a shop, she is saved by an "angel." That's what she calls the handsome man who kills the brutish smuggler and kisses her on the forehead. All she knows is that his clothing and manner proclaim him a gentleman. When she goes to Camelot, she will have to meet him. Morph the Napoleonic Wars into a quest. Scholars surmise the Ark of the Covenant was lost during the Great Flood; why would biblical Noah call his ship "Ark" unless it held the Ark? England, conducting a quest for the Ark, clashed with the French. Bonaparte 'abdicated' rather than publicize his trouncing on the tourney field of Waterloo, where English bested French knights. Britain has abandoned the search, determining that the Ark of the Covenant is lost. Now China is massing an army. Political upheaval means rampant espionage. Unaware of danger lurking, Martha attends a house party. Late one night, searching for a book in the library, she is struck in the forehead by a glass of brandy. Martha inadvertently intrudes on the theft of a sensitive military report. In atonement for her witless response to danger, she plots to recover it. Her chief suspects are members of the Banshee Brigade, a frivolous clique of the hoi polloi. By puka luck or coincidence--and thanks to the insularity of society--Martha's 'angel' arrives at the house party. The Council of the Round Table sends Lord Brinston to recover the stolen report. Clandestine magician, espionage expert, heir to a duke, Brinston is the perennial hero--and her angel. Piqued when he ignores her, Martha mocks and challenges him. Duty became pleasure when he saved a friend's sister from smugglers, but Brinston is less enthralled when they meet again. On a mission for the government, he has no time for dalliance. Convincing the ardent Martha that espionage should be left to the male pushes his patience, if not his magic, to its limits. He must trap the thief before madness becomes murder and treachery becomes treason. Superficially well suited, puckish Martha and austere Brinston have no common thread to pull them together. Brinston doubts desire to recover stolen military secrets is strong enough to weave romance. Yet it feels as if magic flows between them. Martha can no more oppose Brinston than she can resist playing pranks. Can the feisty heroine convince a skittish magician to trust her with the essence of his life?
